August in Norway means one thing for students: the start of a new semester. For many international students, this is more than just a new academic year – it’s the beginning of a new chapter in life. Moving to Norway comes with its fair share of excitement and challenges, from navigating fadderuke to learning how to thrive in a completely different culture.
At Scisco, we know exactly how it feels, because we’ve been there ourselves. Here are some tips to help you start the semester strong:
- Embrace Fadderuke (Buddy Week)
Whether you love parties or prefer quieter activities, fadderuke is your chance to meet people and start building a social circle. Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of big events – most universities offer a mix of gatherings, from barbecues to hikes to quiz nights. The key is to show up at least a couple of times; it’s one of the easiest ways to meet friends early on.
2. Get Familiar with Norwegian Everyday Life
Things may feel unfamiliar at first, from grocery store opening hours to the way Norwegians value personal space. Small steps help: learn how to use your reisekort (travel card), figure out the cheapest grocery shops near you (hint: Rema 1000, Kiwi, and Extra), and start picking up a few Norwegian phrases. Even “takk” (thank you) and “ha det” (bye) go a long way.
3. Balance Studies and Social Life
Norwegian universities expect you to take responsibility for your own studies, which can feel very different compared to other countries. At the same time, building a network here is just as important as passing exams. Block out time for studying but don’t isolate yourself: join a student organization, go for hikes, or just grab coffee with classmates. These connections matter both socially and professionally.
4. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Whether it’s figuring out your D-number, health insurance, or simply finding a group of friends, don’t hesitate to reach out. Norwegian students and staff are often more than willing to help, you just need to take the first step.
Starting a new semester in a new country can feel overwhelming, but it’s also an incredible opportunity. Every international student before you has felt the same nerves, the same excitement, and faced the same questions about how to build a life here. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
At Scisco, we’ve been in your shoes, and our mission is to make your path smoother – whether that’s through practical guides, company spotlights, or opportunities to kickstart your career in Norway.
Welcome to Norway, the journey starts here.
